Fins, Feathers and Fur: The Healing Power of Animals

Speaker(s): Susan Hannifin-MacNab

Stop by this unforgettable and interactive workshop to learn more about the healing power of animals.  We will discuss ways to integrate animals into our lives AND get some much-needed puppy love from the team of highly trained therapy dogs from Love on a Leash San Diego! Whether large or small- with fins, feathers or fur- animals are natural healing resources. Human physiology is positively altered in the presence of our animal companions, which is why therapists, medical professionals, hospice workers, hospitals, and veteran recovery programs have introduced pets to provide comfort and healing to those living with grief and trauma. Even dentists, veterinarians, and health clinics have added freshwater aquariums to their waiting rooms because of the meditative effects of just hearing bubbling filters and watching fish swim. Interacting with animals promotes healing by • decreasing feelings of loneliness and isolation • relieving symptoms of anxiety and depression • increasing the level of the “happy hormone,” oxytocin • improving overall heart health.

“A cat purring on your lap is more healing than any drug in the world, as the vibrations you are receiving are of pure love and contentment.”
— St. Francis of Assisi
